30 January - A top Canadian official met with Haiti's imprisoned former prime minister and urged the US-backed interim government to speed up the process of bringing him to trial on murder charges. Denis Coderre, an advisor to Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin, said he met with former Haitian Prime Minister Yvon Neptune for about an hour Friday in his cell in the National Penitentiary. Coderre, who was wrapping up a two-day visit to Haiti, said he would bring up his concerns about Neptune's case during a meeting Saturday with interim Prime Minister Gérard Latortue. "I believe the government of Latortue should accelerate the legal process," Coderre told The Associated Press on Saturday. "We're against impunity, of course. People can be found guilty, but we have to make sure there's a trial, a process." Coderre said he was the first for
eign official to visit Neptune since his arrest in June. The former premier - the most prominent of dozens of jailed allies of ousted President Jean-Bertrand Aristide - appeared to be "in good shape" physically and mentally, Coderre said. He declined to give details of his conversation with Neptune. (AP)[/quote]
