One and Respe!
How can they send them back amidst all of this madness?
Haitians repatriated by Coast Guard
BY ELAINE DE VALLE
The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter repatriated 82 Haitian migrants to Port-Au-Prince, Haiti, Wednesday morning after they were rescued from their 30-foot white sail freighter off the Bahamas days earlier, officials said.
The 71 men and 11 women -- more than half of whom were crammed below decks -- were spotted late Friday night by the Coast Guard Cutter Confidence out of Port Canaveral, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Anastasia Burns. They were 16 miles south of Great Inagua, Bahamas,
Their vessel was riding precariously low in the water and started to sink, Burns said. The Haitians were bailing water out as they continued sailing toward the Bahamas, she added.
The Coast G
uard crew passed lifejackets to the migrants on the overloaded vessel. Crews moved the migrants onto the cutter, where they received food, water and medical care if needed.
They were later transferred to another cutter, the Harriet Lane based in Virginia, which repatriated them to Haiti about 10 a.m. Wednesday.
