This editorial was written in May 2004. I offer it again today for your consideration, four days after the re-selection of Mr. Bush as President of the United States of America, which can be editorially described as the cancerous tumor that is menacing the health of humanity, and that U.S. Americans failed to remove when given the chance. The task to neutralize this tumor is left to an army of zombies, that is our collectivity, if you choose to join it.
To Live in Fear or to Act for Change: It's our choice!
The majority of the world's people just do not know what they can do to stop the Nazis of the 21st century. There is only ONE military superpower and it is clearly on the side of injustice. The United States and Israel are engaged in the worst crimes against humanity at this time, and a great many people stay silent to protect their jobs and livelihood (while they condemn similar passivity from the Church and society at large when Hitler was at his worst). Today, we also condemn strenuously the complicity of Europeans with the Genocide of the Native American population and the Slavery of African people, which were the greatest crimes against humanity, perpetrated on their behalf during the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. There was no World War to stop Slavery, only a great Abolitionist movement and the symbolic Haitian Revolution. Then there was Fascism, Hitlerism (the Jewish Holocaust), Stalinism... In every heart and mind in America, World War II is celebrated as the historically correct response to put an end to the great human folly of the 20th century. Now, clearly, in the latter part of the 20th and so far in the 21st, the principal victims of Hitler have morphed into the oppressors of the Palestinians, and have been sponsored the whole nine yards by the greatest military power the world has ever seen, the United States of America. While much has been said of Saddam Hussein's suddenly vaporized Weapons of Mass Destruction and North Korea's real ones that have so far prevented an Iraqi-style misadventure on their territory, Israel's longstanding nuclear capabilities remain gloriously undebatable - since they are funded for the most part by the U.S. Government, and hence by American taxpayers. Hitler was in the business of creating orphans, widows, and homeless people amid "THEM" (Jews). Today George W. Bush and Ariel Sharon have assumed the task of creating orphans, widows, and homeless people amid "THEM" (who are not with "US"). While there is a growing Peace Movement that shall ultimately stop them dead in their tracks, the world is still reeling from this so-called war on terrorism, from the shock and awe of American and Israeli military power, from the fears they have instilled in almost everyone to keep quiet while the worst outrages are being perpetrated daily "on our behalf".
While we may take comfort in knowing that History will not be kind to George W. Bush and Ariel Sharon, we fail to understand that our civic acquiescence and passivity has been their greatest source of strength. We may not have (and we indeed reject) military weapons to oppose them (as this only reinforces the deadly cycle of violence), but we have our voices, our votes, our values, our refusal to live in silent fear, our example to others. Ultimately, the choice is ours.
